In this Thanksgiving season, we want to thank supporters, volunteers, AUTMites, and everyone involved with Austin Urban Technology Movement! With more than 100 families enrolled in our training programs and over 30 partnerships collaborating in our workforce development tech ecosystem, there is so much to be thankful for this year.
As we work to close the gap between the Black and Hispanic communities and the tech industry, we encourage you to join us in creating the movement that will impact the lives of countless individuals and families. For a number of years, the world’s biggest tech firms have been rolling out upskilling campaigns, pledging billions to the training of society in order to bridge the skill's shortage in the US and worldwide.
But with the pandemic having accelerated digital transformation, making tech skills even more critical and advanced, the gap continues to widen.
According to Gartner, the pandemic fast-forwarded digital skill's adoption by at least five years, with the majority of organizations reporting a shift toward tech in terms of required skills.

The modern tech start-up business thrives on fast delivery, user feedback and being flexible with their ways of working.

The company behind the world’s biggest employment portal says it has a solution to the labor shortage gripping the U.S.: getting rid of the traditional resume.
Despite the acute need for workers, “the hiring process is still resumes, sending resumes, checking resumes,” said Hisayuki “Deko” Idekoba, chief executive officer of Japan’s Recruit Holdings Co., which runs Indeed.com and Glassdoor. “This is a great opportunity for us to move forward from old-school, incumbent resume-profile culture to asking: what can you do?”

Tech jobs are booming, and hybrid working sees more women join the industry
The UK created an additional 58,000 tech and IT jobs between July and September 2021, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows – with women taking the majority of new roles. Data published today by the ONS shows that there was just shy of 1.6M people employed in the UK's information and communications sector between July and September this year. This is an increase of 69,000 compared to the same period in 2020, and 186,000 more than the pre-pandemic July to September 2019 level of 1.4 million.

The Austin Area Urban League supports microentrepreneurs through its inaugural pitch competition!
PLEASE NOTE: Eventbrite acts as a pre-registration form for potential participants
The Austin Area Urban League's Lone Star Pitch Competition will provide minority pre-launch start-ups and microentrepreneurs a platform to present their business to a team of expert judges to win investment capital. The competition is hosted by the Austin Area Urban League with support from BBVA, Houston Area Urban League, Austin Area Urban League Young Professionals (AAULYP) ,and the Dallas Fort Worth Urban League Young Professionals (DFWULYP).
Winning teams will share the $20,000 cash prize, 1 award in each placement per track. 1st Place: $5,000 2nd Place: $2,500 3rd Place: $1,000 Fan Favorites Finalists: $200
