AUTMHQ UPDATES Hola and Hello! This is a hugely important week for AUTMHQ and our communities. We are honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the greatest Black leaders of our time! With his speech I Have a Dream, delivered on August 28, 1963, during the March in Washington, he did not only touch a specific demographic; this was an all-inclusive call for equality and freedom, and it became one of the most defining moments of the civil rights movement and one of the most iconic speeches in American history. Everyone who shares the same dream is responsible for taking action and promoting equality within our society. You can keep the momentum by participating in AUTMHQ's Honoring MLK Weekend events. On a different note, as the new year rolls out, Austin Urban Technology Movement is warming up to meet all of our objectives. Today, I asked our President and CEO, Michael Ward Jr., "What are your top three goals for AUTMHQ in 2022?" He took a while to respond because it is difficult to narrow down a top-three when our organization has so many goals and aspirations, but he eventually responded: "Paty, the top three goals we are going to achieve this year are as follows: Raise $3 million in revenue, train 250 people and families, and establish ten employer partnerships." As a global organization guiding society toward a new civilization, we need volunteers, donations, and supporters like you to move faster. AUTMHQ is dedicated to reshaping the tech industry and fostering a social and work culture that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion. Why Access to Computer Science Education Should Be the New Space Race
President John F. Kennedy in a 1962 speech at Rice University spoke about why the country should have the goal of going to the moon by saying that “we choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”
As it was in 1962 with space, it is now with technology in general and computer science specifically. The consequences of not making computer science education a national priority are dire. The next generation could be left without a core competency that will be needed to be a central part of the economy of the future not because they lack the talent but because they lack the access. Immediate and urgent action is required.

Diverse Teams Do Better. Here’s How to Build One.
Hiring people from different backgrounds spurs innovation and creativity — these companies are proving it. By Avery Komlofske
Diversity is good for businesses — and the statistics back that up. McKinsey’s Delivering Through Diversity report revealed that companies in the top quartile of gender and ethnic diversity in their leadership were 21 percent and 33 percent more likely to have above-average profitability, respectively. On the other hand, those in the bottom quartile were 29 percent less likely to outperform on profits. The power of a diverse team is especially evident to the companies that have achieved the most success. In a Forbes survey, 85 percent of participants — all of which were companies with over $500 million in revenue — agreed that a diverse workforce was necessary to foster creativity and innovation.
This all makes sense, as having a variety of different perspectives would lead to more creative solutions. And innovation is essential in the world of tech today — with the world-changing as quickly and frequently as it does, it’s difficult to predict what new pain points will need to be addressed.

Dubbed the “Silicon Valley of South America,” Uruguay can be a key piece to helping the U.S. survive and thrive in the 21st-century workforce.
Over the past five years, tech and science jobs in the United States have outnumbered qualified workers by roughly 3 million. At this rate, the next decade could see a global shortage of more than 85 million tech workers, representing $8.5 trillion in lost annual revenue.
In the U.S., that number can be 6 million workers. With the future of many companies becoming more increasingly tied to the strength, diversity, and competency of their tech talent and partners, that shortage could have many consequences.
As the Latinx community continues to represent a significant and growing percentage of both the U.S. workforce and the country’s business owners, they are shaping up to be a major force in the future of the economy [...]. Uruguay is a prominent country in South America; the second-richest and most prosperous country in the continent.

Women In Tech: The Key To Success Post-Pandemic

As leaders in technology gather in person and virtually this week at CES to witness the latest innovations, women in tech should be top of mind—especially given the continuing stresses of the global pandemic. Why? Consider the following:
?? Only 38% of women in technology feel their organization’s commitment to supporting them during the pandemic has been sufficient, and just 30% say their employer increased their access to flexible work.
?? 51% of women in technology feel less optimistic about their career prospects now than before the pandemic, and 57% expect to leave their employer for a new role within 2 years—citing lack of work-life balance as the biggest reason.
It’s sentiments like these and their impact on the sector that has made the importance of supporting women in tech one of the key trends in Deloitte’s 2022 Predictions. If technology companies want to succeed in the coming year and beyond, they need to renew their commitment to advancing gender diversity in tech—especially as COVID-19 moves from pandemic to endemic.

Twenty years ago, a manager pulled me aside and said, “Mike, do you know the difference between a $150,000 network engineer and a $300,000 network architect?” When he told me next completely changed my world. He told me my technical skills were exceptional, and learning more tech would not help my career. That if I wanted to rise from engineer to architect, I needed a different set of skills. He told me these skills were related to leadership skills, presentation skills, business acumen, emotional intelligence, and executive presence. He asked if I wanted to go to leadership training, so I said “yes.”

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. As millions of Americans honor his legacy today with a national day of service, we take a moment to reflect on Dr. King's life and message with his own words. As we did last year on the eve of a historic presidential inauguration, we now revisit King's celebrated "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on August 28, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
