What exactly is a digital footprint?
Join Rob Miller, CEO of VIP IT, Inc., and Caitlin Serian, the @CybersecurityGirl on October 9th at 11 am. A digital footprint is a data trail that you leave behind when you use the Internet. It includes the websites you browse, emails you send, and data you enter into online services. A passive digital footprint is a data trail that you leave online accidentally. So, how concerned should we be about the bread crumbs we leave behind while browsing the web? This will be the main topic of discussion at our upcoming ReThink Austin 2021 session.

AUTM is rapidly expanding its global reach!
AUTM’s national and global reach is undeniable. On any given day our staff is corresponding with AUTMites across the United States (in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas) and as far away as Indonesia. Please know, with each heartbeat, AUTM never sleeps. One of our AUTMites has been working to make ends meet and has decided that the time has come to invest in himself. Our programming department linked him with a Cohort, and he is now on his path to pursue his dream job in software development. On a side note, a mother-son team is eager to begin learning about cybersecurity and pursue a career in it. Both are new to the tech industry and are excited to use the workforce development program to help them with their new venture. They not only have each other, but they also have AUTM. They have finished their orientation and will begin classes right away. Additionally, eight people have been welcomed as volunteers this week. We love this level of involvement! Our CEO, Michael Ward Jr., is always cultivating the strongest possible partnerships with businesses, organizations, community leaders, and other entities interested in joining our workforce development tech ecosystem. Last week, Michael had a great conversation with Everly Health about becoming employer partners. We are super excited about this opportunity. Furthermore, Council Member Kathie Tovo's office voiced appreciation for our efforts and expressed a desire to support our initiatives. AUTM submitted two grants this week, one on workforce development specifically with Austin Public Health and another one with Kilroy Blockchain on contact tracing and vaccination tracking to limit the spread of COVID-19 and create jobs in our community. Austin Urban Technology Movement (AUTM) is pleased to share the successes of our work in the community. Join Paty Sesma, Director of Marketing and Communications at Austin Urban Technology Movement, for the "Nonprofits Tackle the Digital Divide During COVID" webinar. Hear from AUTM and other nonprofits discuss the changes they implemented during the pandemic as they navigated the digital divide.
The pandemic forced us all to make major changes in 2020. Because of the shelter-in-place order, many of us were forced to live our lives online rather than outside our homes. We worked, went to school, and saw our doctors all online. However, thousands of our Central Texas neighbors lacked home internet access, lacked devices, and/or lacked the digital skills to make this transition on their own. This is where the nonprofit sector stepped up and made an impact.
During this webinar, you will meet spokespeople from five organizations representing various issue areas such as K-12 and adult education, youth development, workforce development, and older adults experiencing isolation. The guests will discuss what their organizations have done and continue to do to assist their communities in gaining home access.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, as we continue to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Latinx people in America, we’re thrilled to be able to highlight some incredible individuals doing amazing work in a field we don’t hear nearly enough about. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics aka STEM! People of Latin American descent continue to be under-represented in STEM and it’s clear there’s still a lot of work that needs to happen. According to a recent PEW study, Latinos make up 17 percent of the workforce in this country, but only 8 percent of all STEM workers and that number has only increased by one percent since 2016. That’s in keeping with the increase observed in the workforce as a whole, but what it indicates, is that very few Latinx people are choosing to obtain degrees in STEM fields.

The Boring Company’s work on Prufrock 2 continues as it opens more jobs in Texas
The Boring Company (TBC) continues to work on its tunnel boring machine (TBM), Prufrock 2, in Texas and seems to be making progress with each passing day. Recent TBC job listings hint that the tunneling company is getting closer to launching Prufrock 2 in Austin.
Prufrock will likely be instrumental in TBC’s following tunnels in Fort Lauderdale City, San Bernardino County, and Texas. Prufrock is expected to bore tunnels faster, getting TBC closer to beating Gary the Snail, the company’s mascot of sorts. According to The Boring Company website, Prufrock’s medium-term goal is to surpass 1/10th of human walking speed or 7 miles per day.

Mayor Pro Tem Harper-Madison, Council Member Alter, and Mayor Adler have partnered with United WE to grow the number of women on local civic boards and commissions through the Appointments Project?.
The Appointments Project? will host virtual civic engagement workshops as part of its ongoing initiative to empower more women to serve in public office and increase the gender diversity of civic boards and commissions.
The free workshops will be conducted via webinar to allow Austin women to learn about leadership opportunities and guide them through the process of applying for these important positions.
