AUTMHQ UPDATES
Hola and Hello!
First, and as a friendly reminder, please save the date for Giving Tuesday donations. Many non-profits, including Austin Urban Technology Movement (AUTMHQ), rely on people like you for funding because it is only through your generosity that we are able to assist our Black and Hispanic communities in achieving their professional goals at the same time we achieve our mission.
But, just as we ask for your donations, we also want to express our gratitude as Thanksgiving 2022 approaches. This week, the AUTMHQ team reflects about all the people who have connected with us to get involved with our mission. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to fill out our One Form to request collaboration, such as partners, volunteers, or mentors! You all hold a special place in our hearts at AUTMHQ because it is thanks to people like you that our AUTMites are getting jobs in tech and thus living better lives. This week, prepare for a meaningful Thanksgiving by getting involved in your communities. Join AUTMHQ and ??check out all our upcoming events to be a part of the movement that is connecting individuals and families to the Internet and the technology industry. It's time to "tech the halls," as we say at our organization! ? Gracias and Thank you!

Laid off from your tech job? Day One wants to give you $100,000 to start a company
Day One Ventures, a venture firm launched in 2018 with a pitch to combine venture capital acumen with marketing and communications support, has launched a program aimed explicitly at those impacted by tech layoffs this year.
The program, titled “Funded Not Fired,” will write $100,000 checks into 20 startup teams by the end of the year. Top businesses from the cohort will then get follow-up capital from Day One Ventures commitment to lead their pre-seed round with a $1 million check. In total, the firm is allocating at least $5 million (and at most $10 million) from its $52.5 million fund to back founders spinning out of turbulent startups.

Working Remotely From Another Country: What You Need to Know
If you currently work remotely from Austin, Texas, could you just as easily work remotely from San José, Costa Rica? So-called "digital nomads" make arrangements like this work.
What Is a Digital Nomad? A digital nomad is a person who earns a living working online while traveling. Rather than being in a fixed spot and working locally, they may choose to work remotely in a different country. According to goabroad.com, being a digital nomad is challenging, yet rewarding, and involves at least partial work online in various fields, such as content creation, tech or consulting. Teaching English online is another popular option for digital nomads. Contracted employees can also be considered digital nomads. There are lots of great options for living and working abroad, even working for a U.S. company while in another country.
According to the MBO Partners 2022 State of Independence research study, 16.9 million American workers identify as digital nomads. This is a 9% increase from 2021 and a 131% increase from before the pandemic in 2019. Also, the number of digital nomads with more traditional jobs, that is, employed full-time by an organization, increased by 9% in 2022. In context, this is in addition to the 42% increase in digital nomads from 2020 to 2021.

Diversity and Legal Tech: Are the Two Linked?
There is no shortage of empirical evidence highlighting how a diverse workforce has an outsized, positive impact on a team, company and/or industry. There is likewise a similar body of research drawing a causal nexus between successful technology adoption and a company or industry’s performance. We set out to see if there was a positive feedback loop between both diversity and technology adoption in the legal industry and whether it could drive a ‘sum is greater than its parts’ impact for law firms.
An increasing number of firms are implementing legal tech and diversity is slowly improving across the profession. But, it is up to the lawyers working within law firms to understand if and how they are linked and why these are both important factors for the future success of the industry. The crux of the matter is that the creation of a stronger law firm relies, partly, on the hiring of a diverse workforce. It just so happens that one of the easiest ways to enable this is through the use of legal tech.
